Parachute Games

Parachute games are not only great fun but introduce children to the concept of working together to achieve a common goal. Everyone immediately feels part of the group once they are standing around the circle of the parachute. Children need to concentrate, maintain eye contact and listen carefully to instructions.

The games below develop a variety of skills and rely on co-operation as well as trust.

Waves

This is really just an introduction to working co-operatively with a parachute. Children space themselves around the parachute and each hold an edge in their hands. They create waves in the parachute by moving their arms up and down.

The speed at which they do this can be varied so that the effect of a storm on the sea is created. First of all slow, gentle movements that gradually increase in intensity to strong and fast then gradually weaken again.

Umbrella

Children hold the parachute around the edge while it is on the floor. They make the umbrella by all lifting at the same time as high as they can on the command ‘Lift!’ The air becomes trapped inside the parachute making the umbrella shape before gradually descending to the ground.

Mushroom

Again the children hold the parachute and lift it high to make an umbrella. Then they quickly bring the edges down to the floor trapping the air in the shape of a mushroom.

Tent

The children make an umbrella then quickly bring the parachute down behind their backs so that they can sit inside it like a tent. One child can be chosen before the lift begins as the person to run into the middle and act as the tent pole when the parachute begins to descend.

Changeover

Children could wear coloured bands or just play this according to the colour of the clothes they are wearing.

Make a mushroom with the parachute then call out a command such as ‘Change over if you are wearing red’. Everyone wearing red has to run under the parachute to the opposite side before the parachute lands on them.

The game could be adapted to use birthdays, names beginning with ‘d’ or other appropriate criteria.

Jaws

Everyone sits on the floor holding the parachute stretched out with their legs underneath it. The parachute becomes the sea with the children sitting on the beach dipping their toes.

Create the waves on the sea by rippling it gently with arms then choose a child to be the shark. The shark disappears under the chute and moves around relatively unseen due to the waves.

The shark selects a victim then pulls them under the parachute so that they disappear. This person then becomes the shark. The first person can either also stay as a shark or become one of the bathers.

Deep Sea Fishing

A number of quoits or beanbags are placed under the parachute to represent fish. Three children are chosen as the fishermen.

Everyone else sits holding the parachute a little off the ground and creating waves. The fishermen go under the parachute collecting as many fish as they can in thirty seconds. On the command ‘Time to head for home’ they immediately come out.
